Smoking cannabis has its effects, but how dangerous is it?

Puffing on a joint and getting high is what most teenagers who dabble in drugs adore to do in their spare time. Not only is it teenagers who have been known to smoke pot, but many older generations also. Famous faces such as Elvis Presley, Sinead O'connor, Kurt Cobain, Lindsay Lohan and even Bill Clinton have been known to smoke marijuana in the past, despite the fact the drug is illegal. (And there's plenty more where that came from.)

Marijuana has been used for many different reasons since as long ago as 6000 BC. The first woven fabric cloth was made out of hemp and marijuana was known to be used for many healing properties, incense and clothing for years to come.

Over the years there was debate about whether it was a harmful drug and if it was related to drug abuse and depression. Conclusions were met that it was a drug with a ''high potential for abuse''. This meaning that those who smoke it tend to let it dominate their lives as they get hooked on the mellow, happy feeling that drowns their body with each puff of smoke they inhale.

This resulted in the drug becoming illegal, therefore those caught with it in their possession would have it confiscated and may even face prosecution with a jail sentence if a substantial amount is on a person. However, this has not stopped cannabis users from lighting up their joints. The number of smokers in ages young and old is ever increasing, letting us know there must be many dealers out there hiding their magic herbs.

Marijuana statistics

Despite the fact this drug is banned in most countries around the world, its usage levels continue to soar. Take a look at some of the following statistics relating to those who smoke the drug:

  • Smoking cannabis is most popular among college students
  • Over 30% of college students claimed to have used the drug in the last year
  • Marijuana is used most commonly through ages of 18-25

These facts are true and remain true as time progresses. Those who smoke the drug fall in love with the effects it gives. Smoking a joint or a spliff is known to relieve stress and relax a person to the point where the may feel they are melting out of reality and into a land where there is nothing to worry about.

This is understandable in the sense that many people would require a bottle of wine or a pint of beer at the end of a hard day to unwind. But is being dependent on this herb a disastrous thing to do? Of course it takes money out of the users pocket on a regular basis and many frown upon it.

Health issues and problems have been linked to the smoking of cannabis such as mental health problems like anxiety, depression, panic attacks and schizophrenia. Although these are issues that consistently come up when talking about the harmful effects of smoking marijuana, how much of it is true? And is it good for a person in any way?

Effects of smoking cannabis

Short term effects

The short term effects of this drug that occur when under the spell of the active ingredients delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol or THC include the following:

  • Trouble with thinking
  • Trouble with concentration
  • State of unawareness
  • Slow reactions, movements and distorted perceptions
  • Increased heart rate
  • Reduced blood pressure

These are worrying facts alone and should be taken into consideration for anyone thinking about trying the drug. Many succumb to the need of smoking a joint and ignore the facts that remain, which is a dangerous thing for those not understanding the strain they are putting their bodies through.

Marijuana has also been known as a 'gateway' drug. This name came about due to the amount of heroin and crack users who began their drug infested lives by lighting up a joint crammed with the strong smelling plant. (Find out about the effects of cocaine here - one of the drugs that can be linked to smoking cannabis.)

Although long term effects have been studied such as links relating to intelligence and mental health problems, this is still a highly debated topic. Nothing is yet to prove that the drug produces these problems solely.

Which follows on to the next question - Are there any benefits of cannabis use?

The surprising answer is YES. This is a miraculous drug that many perceive as a dark and damaging hobby. Of course, like any other drug, the overusing of this product can be harmful. However, there are medical properties to this fascinating herb that produce positive effects and can be beneficial to many problems.

Interesting facts of marijuana benefits

  • Studies have shown that the brain cells marijuana kills are more often cancerous or precancerous cells that would possibly turn into tumors if not killed by the drug.
  • Marijuana can help to heal asthma.
  • Induces appetite and decreases nausea for Chemotherapy and AID's patients.
  • Very good as a pain reliever.
  • Produces positive effects for insomnia sufferers.
  • Relieves nausea, stress, persistent muscle spasm, headaches, migraines, arthritis, spasticity.
  • Has helped anorexic people to gain an appetite again.
  • Marijuana is a sociable drug
  • Can prevent Alzheimer’s.
  • Marijuana seeds are high in beneficial acids - 1 bowl is equal to 1000 bowls of oatmeal.
  • Spiritually allows your mind to wander into depths you don't when not on the drug.

These surely are great reasons to support the drug. However, condemning smoking a drug is in no way a good thing to do. For those who have motivation, smoking in moderation reduces the chance of it taking over your life. But aside from these marvelous effects, the fact remains that there are many negative points to taking the drug.

Whether you decide to relish in its wondrous properties or avoid it for its negative effects is completely up to you. But one thing is for sure; this drug is to be a popular choice for those who like to escape reality, for a long time to come.

Tobacco kills more people than marijuana, but it's taxable and marijuana could be also- that's the politics of it. On a personal not I understand pain, I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and if I could not find other meds to assist wih it, I'd be smoking a joint. This coming from someone who has never done recreational drugs in my life- never even smoked a cigarette. But I can empathize with people who need pain relief. I found your facts interesting about marijuana- some stuff I didn't know. Great hub

If an adult I knew came to me on the verge of smoking cigarettes or cigars, chewing tobacco or drinking beer or alcohol as opposed to smoking pot, I would most assuredly encourage them to do the least damaging drug. POT! It is my experienced opinion that it is not addictive OR a gateway drug. Crack and heroin users are going to be the addicts that they are whether or not they start with pot, cigarettes or booze. These types of people just cannot get high enough EVER...thanks for helping to inform the uninformed. Nice hub

Thanks very much for your great comments, I appreciate it! I agree with those views, I do believe it is wrong for those who sell it to gain so. much profit whilst other people work hard for a living. Which is all the more reason why the government shouldn't be so hard on this drug. If anything I think the world may be a better place if everyone smoked it and stayed peceful and happy! Although I don't think much work would ever get done, lol

My son lives in Colorado, which is a medical marijuana state. He has his card for migraines and I am so glad he was finally able to get off the migraine meds. Those are so much more dangerous than pot.

I bet, its so overrated. I think its a wonder drug, so long as you don't let it take over your life, but that's all down to the person! Thanks for commenting . :-)

I used to smoke marijuana frequently and I loved it. It helped me with anxiety and stress. I only stopped smoking because I can't afford to test positive and lose my job. It's sad to me that marijuana is always made to be the villain, while tobacco and alcohol are celebrated, especially here in the U.S.

It's only a gateway drug for people who are weak.

If more people smoked marijuana, there would be less war, because people who are stoned absolutely can't fight, it's impossible.

I completely agree. Drinking alcohol makes people do things they may regret, or act in a silly way. Smoking marijuana is a relief of stress, worries, anxiety. It calms a person and this world would certainly be a happier and more relaxed place if everyone was stoned. LOL, not that I'm forcing everyone to smoke it! ;)

It has beneficial factors and the paranoia side of it I believe stems from the person who smokes it, not the actual drug.

A wonderful article. And i have to agree with all your commenters. Those who like nothing more than to make laws on foolishness, have no clue what they are saying. The "gateway" argument is only valid if the person already has an addictive personality. The health benefits far out weigh the supposedly 'negative' effects. I have been an avid user for many years, and it certainly helped me to get rid of those incapacitating migraine headaches i suffered with through my teenage years, 20's and 30's. I never even considered using anything more potent. As a nurse who worked with cancer/aides patients for many years i have recommended the use of marijuana for their pain, nausea, anxiety, and fear. Those who chose to use it for those reasons benefited from its use.

Those people who are still in prison for using pot is a travesty of justice if i ever saw one. This is one idiotic and barbaric law that should have been overturned years ago. No one has the ethical right to dictate what another person uses, whether pot, alcohol, medicinal medicines, or what kinds of foods we eat.

A couple of years ago the state of Maine, voted to make marijuana legal by an overwhelming margin of the citizens of Maine. The federal government overrode that state law and stated that they (the federal government) would prosecute to the full extent of the law, anyone known to use, or possess, marijuana in that state. What kind of people are running this government? God, bless you for writing this article. It certainly makes me want to start using it again, to ward off the doldrums of old age. However, I seem to have lost my suppliers over the years. L.O.L. Good job.

Thanks very much for your comment! I agree with everything you've said, it's a wonder drug and how you control your life when using it is completely dependent on what type of person you are!

All hail the marijuana! LOL
